According to a blogpost by singer/guitarist Johanna Fateman, Le Tigre’s song Deceptacon had become “Christina’s jam” in the first part of 2009.

“At first we were tormented by the goal of writing ‘another Deceptacon’ for her, wondering how to crack the code to its energy and production style,” Fateman explained, “plus we wanted to write melodies that would showcase Christina’s incredible voice … But we quickly realised that we just had to be ourselves and put our hearts into pulling together our best demos to play for her.”

Though the band is on hiatus, Fateman and Kathleen Hanna traded bits of songs on portable hard drives, while JD Samson sent them “loops and basslines” during her tour with Men. In June, not long after Fateman gave birth to a daughter, she and Samson met with Aguilera in Los Angeles. “Meeting Christina and working at her home studio was simultaneously super-comfortable and normal-seeming while also kind of a mind-blowing window into another world,” Fateman wrote. The decor is apparently red and black, with bowls of Ricola cough drops and “crucifix doorknobs”. But there was also, Fateman raved, “cool and beautiful books and tons of notepads and a million great pens”.

As for the singing, Fateman calls Aguilera a “technical virtuoso behind the mic”, “totally cool and hilarious and down-to-earth”. The 29-year-old diva ad-libbed variations and harmonies, giving detailed comments at the end of each day. Nor was there any crisis of philosophy between Le Tigre’s steely politics and Aguilera’s plastic-wrapped pop. “[We] found a ton of common ground in our aim to make upbeat danceable tracks celebrating female friendship, strength, and of course, PARTYING,” Fateman said. “For a feminist band obsessed with pop music, it was pretty much a dream come true.”

“The songs have a lot of elements we’re known for, like a garage guitar sound, schoolyard chants, new wave-y synths [and] electro beats,” Fateman promised, “[but] somehow it all sounds crazily right with Christina’s unbelievable voice.”

Le Tigre aren’t the only alternative act to have been tapped for what will be Aguilera’s fourth studio album. MIA, Goldfrapp, Santigold, Sia and Ladytron have also spent time in her studio.

iTunes confirmed Thursday (January 28) that tracks from last week’s landmark benefit show have combined to generate more than $3 million in relief funds. On Wednesday, the Hope for Haiti Now album became the first-ever digital-only album to debut at #1 on the SoundScan charts. Through Sunday of this past weekend, the album was purchased and downloaded more than 170,000 times — nearly all of the sales coming from the iTunes store.

As the Hope for Haiti Now album approaches its one-week anniversary, records continue to be set: The album’s pre-order, which went live shortly before Friday’s massive telecast, became the biggest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history. The album has also hit #1 on the iTunes chart in 18 different countries.

In addition to the iTunes numbers, the telethon itself has gathered more than $61 million in public donations, drew 83 million viewers and attracted 5.8 million streams on the Web.

Much of the success is owed to the acts who performed at the telethon, including Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Coldplay and many more.

Her still-untitled April release will be the pop powerhouse’s first studio album since 2006’s Back to Basics. Alongside usual suspects Linda Perry, who penned Aguilera’s 2002 smash ”Beautiful,” and R&B hitmaker Tricky Stewart (Beyoncé, Rihanna), the guest list reads like a roll call of cool-girl cred: M.I.A., Santigold, Le Tigre, Ladytron, and ”Breathe Me” songstress Sia.

Appearing together in a new public service announcement, the duo are teaming up to raise funds for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Haitian relief effort. Donations will go directly to WFP’s efforts to get food to survivors of Haiti’s devastating earthquake.

The PSA urges viewers to donate $5 by texting FRIENDS to 90999 or visit www.fromhungertohope.com. Your donation of $5 will feed 20 hungry children in the earthquake-ravaged country, according to the WFP.

Aguilera is also the spokesperson for Yum! Brands World Hunger Relief, the world’s largest private-sector, hunger-relief effort that is underwriting the PSA.

“I’m devastated by the toll that the earthquake has taken, and as a mom, I am especially heartbroken by the children and families affected,” Aguilera said. “My goal for the PSA is to inspire as many people as possible to donate to the World Food Programme so they can continue to feed the survivors in Haiti and move them from hunger to hope.”

“The earthquake and the aftershocks in Haiti are among the worst tragedies of our lifetime,” Muhammad Ali said of the tragedy. “I urge people from around the world to open their hearts and give anything they can to help the World Food Programme’s relief efforts in Haiti.”
