Makes us think of: Christina Aguilera. This spritely singer from Tennessee is petite in stature, but has a big voice — just like Xtina. And though she has fresh-scrubbed, all-American looks, her boozy-floozy voice reminds us of some of Christina’s more suggestive performances. Here’s hoping Alexis is as adept as Christina at reinventing her sound as the season goes on. We love what she’s giving us, but we want to be surprised. Also, like Christina, she’s got impeccable taste in hats.
The recent resurgence of the Lemonheads has been an unexpected and pleasant surprise, and Evan Dando is releasing a cover album to bridge the time gap until his next original set, which is due some time in 2009. Vershons, due out September 13 from Vagrant Records, finds Dando and an as yet unnamed backing group tackling a wide variety of music, ranging from his alt-country idols Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt to more esoteric fare by the likes of G.G.
